In 2024 you see this practice with Discord Emote artists: they make a template then are commissioned to fill it in with a streamer, oc, or character. In the early 2000s, you could run into this practice on Neopets.com with people making custom adoptables of each other’s pets. Instead of commissioning one another, as trading IRL money was forbidden on the site, all art trades were done with adoptables.
